Clinical Study Demonstrates Inlet Medical, Inc.s UPLIFT Procedure Reduces Women's Pelvic Pain Caused By A Tipped Uterus

10/19/2005 5:09:10 PM

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Inlet Medical Inc., a privately held medical device company that develops and markets laparoscopic surgery procedure kits, announced today publication of a clinical study demonstrating that the company's UPLIFT laparoscopic surgical procedure significantly reduces pelvic pain in women caused by a retroverted or tipped uterus. The study's findings are in the August issue of The Journal of Reproductive Medicine. The lead author is Dr. C. Paul Perry, Birmingham, Ala., along with Dr. James Presthus, Edina, Minn., and Dr. Alfredo Nieves-Gonzales, Chattanooga, Tenn.

A retroverted uterus is a normal anatomic variant in 20 to 30 percent of women in the United States. Within this patient population, 7 to 10 percent have symptoms of pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual periods) or dyspareunia (painful intercourse) severe enough to seek treatment.

"The study results confirm earlier findings that our products play an important role in the successful laparoscopic surgical treatment of women who suffer severe pain related to a tipped uterus," said Lee Jones, president and chief executive officer, Inlet Medical. "The UPLIFT procedure offers an alternative to women who may have sought treatment from many other sources."

The evaluation included 62 women, average age 29, with a retroverted uterus and chronic pelvic pain lasting six months or more, and moderate to severe dysmenorrhea or dyspareunia. Each patient underwent the UPLIFT procedure (only or in combination with other indicated laparoscopic procedures) and was monitored for 12 months afterward. Patients were asked at regular intervals to rate their pain on a zero to 10 scale, with zero being no pain and 10 being the worst pain imaginable. At 12 months post surgery, the mean scores for pelvic pain decreased by more than 50 percent, a significant change in this difficult-to-treat patient population.

Dr. Perry concluded: "Laparoscopic uterine suspension with the UPLIFT procedure may result in significant long-term pain reduction in selected women with severe dysmenorrhea and/or dyspareunia. UPLIFT provides clinicians with a durable treatment option that enhances quality of life for women with these complex conditions."

About the UPLIFT Procedure

UPLIFT (uterine positioning by ligament investment fixation and truncation) is a laparoscopic procedure introduced by Dr. James E. Carter, which uses Inlet Medical's Metra PS(R) surgical procedure kit to restore a tipped uterus to a normal anatomic position, thereby reducing pain. Inlet Medical has marketed the Metra PS kit since 1999.

The UPLIFT procedure is a simple surgical procedure that shortens and strengthens the round ligaments to reposition a tipped uterus to a normal position. UPLIFT is performed using a minimally interventional laparoscopic technique with small incisions, and patients typically leave the hospital on the day of surgery. Women who undergo this procedure can still become pregnant, and other publications have documented full-term pregnancies with normal vaginal delivery.
