DESCRIPTION
The successful candidate will lead the established Relypsa chemistry team in a dynamic interdisciplinary environment to discover and develop new polymer-based therapeutics.
Relypsa, Inc. is a privately-held, development stage, biopharmaceutical company leading the discovery and development of novel non-absorbed polymer-based therapeutics. Founded in 2007, Relypsa was formed as a spin-out of Ilypsa, Inc., which was acquired by Amgen after developing a next-generation phosphate-binding polymer. Relypsa's lead product, a potassium binder for the management of hyperkalemia, is in Phase 2 clinical trials. Relypsa has discovery programs that are progressing through preclinical analyses towards IND-enabling studies. Scientists at Relypsa conduct high-throughput screening campaigns using intensive automation and simulated biological matrices, together with a robust in vivo capability. Relypsa is dedicated to using its proprietary polymer platform to discover additional drugs for new indications.
Requirements:
•Ph.D. in Chemistry with a strong foundation in polymer and organic chemistry
•More than 10 years of experience in biotech/pharmaceutical industry
•At least 5 years demonstrated managerial experience with a chemistry team that has identified a lead candidate from inception through to the clinic
•Proven track record in optimizing the chemical process of selected leads
•Good networking skills with experts in academia and industry
•Strong decision making capabilities
REQUIREMENTS:
Responsibilities:
•Strategize within an interdisciplinary team to identify and select promising targets applicable to Relypsa’s discovery platform
•Manage multiple chemistry programs at various stages in the discovery process
•Provide leadership for the chemistry team
•Ensure efficient transition of lead candidates from discovery chemistry to development team
•Effectively communicate, mentor and motivate at all levels (RA to Senior Management) and within all disciplines of the company
•Identify outside expertise and manage external work to support in-house studies
•Optimize chemistry resources, including hiring as appropriate
•Foster strong collaborations with biologists, analytical scientists, CMC and others to maintain essential cross-functional scientific synergies
•Provide scientific input and knowledge to support business growth
•Report directly to Chief Scientific Officer, Senior V.P. Research
