DESCRIPTION
A vacancy has arisen in the R&D Department for a R&D Manager. Applications are invited from Medtronic employees within the company. External applicants will also be considered.

Job Purpose:
The role of the R&D manager will be to provide strong leadership, talent management and technical skills to the Coronary/Peripheral group in the design and development of innovative devices to be used in the treatment of Cardio Vascular disease.

Duties & Responsibilities:
* Lead a group of technical staff (approximately 10 personnel) in the definition, development and commercialization of catheter based technologies/devices in line with the CardioVascular strategy.
* Coordinate the activities of engineers in the solution of complex product and process development problems using engineering expertise, experimental design methods, statistical analysis, and effective writing and presentation skills.
* Provide motivation, coaching and professional development opportunities to the R&D group.
* Supervise engineers leading or participating in Product Development Core Teams.
* Utilizing strong Program management skills, be capable to take a leadership role on a Core Team
* Work closely with marketing in the identification of opportunities for new vascular technologies.
* Collaborate with our physician partners to identify novel new technology, improvements to existing product designs or new clinical applications for our current technology.
* Develop functional expertise within R&D related to product development processes.
* Ensure all design control procedures and company procedures are followed before and during product release.
* Conduct or contribute substantially to Design Reviews, Phase reviews, and peer reviews for projects within R&D.
* Maintain current knowledge of competitive technologies in addition to medical, technical, and biomedical developments related to products.
* Assist in developing and implementing Annual Operating Plan. Develop and track cost center budgets. Participate, along with project leads, in the development and management of project budgets.
* Contribute to the intellectual property position of the company by actively promoting the generation of invention disclosures and patent applications
* Maintain a professional and credible image with physicians, consultants, vendors and co-workers.


REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications & Experience:
* Third Level Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Biomedical, Materials) or equivalent is required. Post Graduate qualification is desirable.
* Minimum eight years related experience in the medical device industry including program management responsibility and prior people management experience.
* Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts related to product, process, and technology development and evaluation. Knowledge of statistical techniques is desirable.
* Knowledge of vascular disease, therapies and device markets, is required, as is an understanding of design control principles, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)/Quality System Regulations (QSR).
