DESCRIPTION
The following opportunity exists in Solano County, CA:

Animal Care Supervisor/Senior Supervisor

This position is responsible for daily coordination and management of the husbandry activities and first-line supervision of care staff for our genetically modified murine facility in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, regulations and guidelines, contract requirements, facility and care and research Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), approved experimental protocols and accepted care practices. This position provides direct assistance to the AC Program Manager, the Associate Director and Director of Murine Genetics Program with development and implementation of the institutional care and use program necessary to ensure regulatory compliance and continued accreditation by AAALAC, International.

Responsibilities:
*Direct management and first-line supervision of scheduling daily work, monitoring work performance, providing written and oral instructions, training, motivation and performance management
*Ensures daily care in a humane, safe and sanitary manner using appropriate equipment and established procedures in compliance with all regulations and accrediting agency standards
*Maintain the facilities, equipment and adequate supplies daily and keeps accurate and timely records and documentation of work activities
*Conducts regular inspections of the facility to ensure that the proper standards are maintained and provides reports and recommendations to management on activities (room care, environmental conditions and maintenance activities, feed receipt/distribution, quality assurance data, health checks and clinical case reports, etc.)
*Assist with developing, writing, implementing, maintaining, updating and ensuring compliance with SOPs and procedures related to care and use, quality assurance, cleaning/sanitation/decontamination programs/schedules, transport and others, as needed
*Conduct performance reviews and address performance issues in timely manner with guidance from manager and HR
*Under management direction, develop and implement programs and provide staff training and monitoring to ensure compliance with biosecurity, safety, maintenance/renovation, health surveillance and occupational health programs, as applicable to care operations
*Order supplies on a weekly basis depending upon inventory
*Coordinate, with other supervisors, personnel resources during shortages
*Develop and optimize work flow with a focus on quality, efficiency, safety and humane care
*Perform routine health care and surveillance procedures, veterinary treatments and technical support procedures as needed and supply required documentation
*Assist with automated wash equipment and related activities
*Perform administrative functions, such as attendance and participation in select meetings, preparation of work schedules, monthly reports, etc
*Attend continuing education seminars, workshops, etc., relevant to corporate and professional interests


REQUIREMENTS:
*Four year degree in Biological Sciences or related field
*AALAS certification at the LAT level
*Minimum of 5-7 years of husbandry/research experience including experience or familiarity with the management of murine laboratory breeding systems
*3-5 years of experience managing staff, including performance management, training, coaching, mentoring, motivating, development and project management
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills
*Has a customer-focused attitude and enjoys working with similarly dedicated persons in a team fashion within a high-energy research environment
*Familiarity with electronic data capture systems using barcodes and other data-management systems
*Excellent organizational, time-management, interpersonal and communication skills
*Must possess a good working knowledge of federal regulations and standards related to care and use (e.g., PHS, USDA, OLAW, OSHA, FDA and AAALAC)
*Ability to function independently and utilize good judgment
* Direct experience or familiarity with automated wash equipment, waste removal and water distribution systems, etc
*With proper training, must be willing to work with and around chemical carcinogens and other potentially hazardous materials
*Flexibility to work on weekends and holidays as required
