DESCRIPTION
This position is in the Chemical Process Research and Development department at Amgen Thousand Oaks. The Scientific Director will join a chemistry development team that is responsible for the technology to prepare Amgen's small molecule API candidates through all phases of development. In this role, the ideal candidate will use her/his experience in pharmaceutical development to guide teams and staff towards creative, innovative and robust solutions to prepare small molecule drug candidates. Advanced scientific writing, problem solving skills and abilities to bring in new technologies are highly desirable. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated an ability to work effectively in a team environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
A Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry with minimum of 10 or more years of experience is required with the following expertise: 1. Synthetic organic chemistry experience with an ability to perform short, and long term route development 2. Experience with catalytic chemistry both heterogeneous and homogenous systems and their successful implementation into processes to produce API's on a range of scales. 3. Understanding of regulatory requirements for chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) production including cGMP's and ICH guidelines. 4. Track record of peer reviewed publications as well as participation in scientific conferences 5. 10+ years of leading scientific teams and driving scientific projects.
Preferred Qualifications: 1. Experience with the discovery, development and implementation of novel long term routes for the safe and cost effective manufacture of API's. 2. Experience with the strategic use of outsourcing. 3. Experience with the use of analytical instruments (HPLC, NMR, IR and MS) and interpreting the scientific data based upon these instruments. 4. Familiarity with the use of design of experiments (DOE) and Process Analytical Technology (PAT) techniques in process development. 5. Track record of championing cutting edge scientific ideas and strategies that impact processes, their incumbent organizations and the field in general. 6. A proven track record of working crossfunctionally to solve challenging drug development problems 7. Strong track record in the training and development of scientific staff. 8. Self motivated along with strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to work in a multidiscipline team.
