DESCRIPTION
Responsible for leading, supervising and coordinating all process development, formulation, pilot plant manufacturing operations and transfer to the Company's contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) for scale-up production. The primary key function is to develop processes for our microbial products and then scale them to commercial scale – fermentation process development, optimization, and scale up; downstream processing development and scale up; formulation development and scale up and transfer to manufacturers. Serves as scientific leader to the company on microbial fermentation, downstream processing and formulation, bringing and vetting new ideas in the group and project teams, and driving good science behind process development and scale up. Works with the VP of Business Development & Mfg to locate and vet contract manufacturers. Must be well organized and able to develop detailed work plans and constantly communicate plans and results.
The following responsibilities will fall under his/her control:
Supervise a group of biologists and engineers to develop optimal commercial processes and formulations for microbial (and occasionally plant extracted) products
Serve as the scientific leader to the company on microbial fermentation, downstream processing and formulation
Lead Technical transfer from R&D and acquired technologies to onsite manufacturing
Insure projects and products are delivered on time to meet commercial market entry
Determine cost of current products and ideal cost and develop and lead plan to move from high to lower cost processes.
Develop and work with Supply Chain Manager to source raw materials for product formulation, packaging, containers, etc.
Research, develop, and supervise installation of process equipment in lab & pilot plant
Do production planning to determine product needs for each product and capacity required
Foster strong working relationships with staff across R&D and Manufacturing functions and promote a proactive, collaborative atmosphere
REQUIREMENTS:
M.S. or Ph.D. degree in microbiology/biochemistry.
A minimum of ten years industrial fermentation & manufacturing experience, preferably with >10 years experience. Strong knowledge and experience in developing microbiological industrial fermentation processes and techniques, required.
Well organized, with strong planning skills, able to prioritize and execute to meet corporate goals. Self-directed, high energy, and sense of urgency regarding deadlines. Must be able to motivate staff to make things happen and function effectively as a team.
Aptitude for understanding the business aspects of organization's goals and its underlying business strategy.
Familiarity with GLP manufacturing
