DESCRIPTION
Roche is seeking a versatile and highly motivated individual to join its Analytical Chemistry team located in the San Francisco Bay area. The successful candidate will provide analytical support to scientists working on small molecule therapeutics in the Virology Disease Area from discovery through early development. While this position has a strong emphasis on chromatography, the analytical team supports a wide variety of analytical techniques and would prefer an individual with a broad analytical skill set.

Job Responsibilities:

* The candidate will provide expert and timely analytical support to scientists across the Roche Virology Disease area including the following:

* Perform chromatographic separations (including chiral) using HPLC and/or SFC equipment on both small and large scales (mg. to ca. 100g).

* Independently carry out HPLC and LC-MS analyses including methods development and data interpretation. Provide expert assistance to other Roche scientists for similar activities.

* Maintain chromatographic instrumentation and participate in the identification, development and implementation of new technologies that will improve the overall purification and analytical process.

* Assist in the operation and maintenance of open-access instrumentation including LC-MS, NMR, IR, UV, and a Polarimeter.

* Maintain integrity of the chemical inventory which includes registering newly purchased chemicals in an electronic inventory database, returning used chemicals to stockroom, periodically reviewing stockroom contents, and removing expired/empty chemicals from stockroom and database.


REQUIREMENTS:
* B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry or a related scientific field with 0-4 years of relevant work experience.

* Experience with analytical and preparative chromatographic separation technologies including HPLC and SFC.

* Experience with chiral and achiral separations including chromatographic methods development, sample preparation, and analysis.

* Hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation and techniques used in the characterization of small organic compounds such as LC-MS, NMR , GC, UV, IR, and optical rotation with a solid understanding of the underlying chemistry.

* Familiarity with modern data acquisition and/or electronic databases.

* Flexibility and willingness to learn new techniques.

* Solution-oriented mentality with a cooperative attitude.

* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

* Excellent interpersonal skills with effective oral and written communication.
