UC Riverside's College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) has three core thrusts: the agricultural sciences, the biological sciences and the physical sciences. CNAS conducts research that explores the fundamental principles underlying biological activity, the nature of the physical universe, and mathematical and statistical operations. Applied research programs seek to improve human health, conserve and preserve natural resources and biodiversity, and address the many issues that affect agricultural productivity. Areas of targeted growth are pest and disease sciences, environmental sciences, genomics, nanoscale technology, and materials science.
Biotechnology research centers include the Institute for Integrative Genome Biology, Center for Plant Cell Biology, and the Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering. The genomics core and analytical chemistry instrumentation facilities provide services and equipment for UCR and non-UCR researchers and students.

The Institute for Integrative Genome Biology provides the latest tools for advanced studies in genomics, gene expression, proteomics, microscopy and bioinformatics. The Center for Plant Cell Biology (CEPCEB) incorporates research from various disciplines to study protein functions in plant cells. The Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering conducts research for the Nanoscience Innovation for Defense (CNID), a collaborative effort by UCR, UCSB, and UCLA funded by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and Defense MicroElectronics Activity (DMEA). CNID research at UCR will focus on nanoscale electronic devices, spintronic devices - organic and inorganic - multiporphyrin molecular memories, neurons and nanotubes, and sensors.

The Center for Technology Development was created to link the University with the biotechnology/high-technology industry. It facilitates the mutual exchange of scientific discovery amongst UCR researchers, government and industry.
